"dealing with reality"? The reality is that the state needs more revenue. The reality is that a few out of state corporations do not need $2B in tax breaks. The reality is that those who refuse to recognize THIS reality are doing so willfully and with knowledge of the dire consequences for hundreds of thousands of Californians.

So negotiate scaled back benefits in return for jobs maintained.

And/or, consider where those public employees will be spending that money. Hint: it will almost certainly be in the private sector.

I can't believe that serious people are falling for some of this. Deficit hawks talk about "our grandchildren" and the level of debt they will "inherit" - and they figure that number on a per capita basis rather than in proportion to the family income and the benefit they've derived from the past 10 years.

If they cared about our grandchildren, they would understand that if our grandchildren are raised, right NOW, in poverty, in severely stressed schools, their prospects and those of the nation will be diminished.

This just about says it all. Can it be possible that the Governor sees this as a way to balance the budget and NOT leave CalWORKS families unemployed and homeless? If so, he must be an expert at fooling himself.

Instead of making cuts and raising taxes where the money is, he chooses once again to add to the suffering of natural human beings, including children, based on a tired ideology that hasn't worked out very well for anyone in the state - even those he favors who actually live here.

Does he think that an oil severance tax would cause the oil companies to pack up and leave the state, stop drilling? Does he understand that companies might leave the state even if he cuts their taxes? At some point, they simply won't want to be here to watch the annual budget horror show, or to live among a populace sliding into third world poverty. And where will their low paid workers come from, when those workers can no longer work due to loss of child care? I'm betting unemployed managers and professionals wouldn't work out in these jobs.

More likely it's just another cynical and desperate attempt to avoid dealing with the reality that the "low hanging fruit" is now hanging on the corporate tree - and/or it's a negotiating ploy. He does, after all, have a clear history of playing "chicken" with the Legislature. This time, he must not win.

The Legislature should reject ALL cuts to human services until an oil severance tax is agreed to, as well as a revocation of corporate tax cuts agreed to in secret during "emergency" budget negotiations, AND the 10% and 11% income tax brackets we used to have, when times were GOOD, have been reinstated.

I have been on Medicare/Medicaid most of my life because of disability. The dental services in place were minimal and to now have nothing is devastating...and cruel. And as usual we've shot ourselves in the foot thinking eliminating dental services would save money - as previously stated in the article it will probably cost us more in exorbitant emergency room fees and needless pain and suffering.
