Feb. 16th Call-In Day!

16 February, 2011 (16:21) | Grassroots Action | By: HHS Network CA

As you all know, the Governor’s proposal to include $12 billion in real, sustainable revenues is a bold first step toward balancing the budget, and one for which we have been calling for years.

However, Brown’s budget also includes unsustainable and potentially lethal cuts to critical programs that keep thousands of Californians healthy, housed, and alive, including Medi-Cal, CalWORKS, In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) and others.

That’s why we need to keep the pressure on our Democratic legislators in the Capitol and urge them to identify less dangerous alternatives to the Governor’s most lethal cuts.  We know that means making tough choices, but that’s what it will take to fix California’s deficit while leaving core government functions intact.

Please take a moment to call key legislators and the Governor TODAY! Let them know just how cruel these cuts really would be for the most vulnerable Californians, and urge them to find alternative solutions!

We need to tell legislators and key budget decision makers that we’re counting on them to find alternative solutions that would allow us to avoid life-threatening cuts, including:

  • Medi-Cal -  Restricts the number of doctor visits, drugs & wheelchairs
  • CalWorks – Eliminates aid to more than 230,000 low-income children
  • SSI – Reduces individual grants by $15 on top of cuts in previous years
  • IHSS – Imposes another 8% cut in hours on top of last year’s 3% cut
  • Eliminate Adult Day Health Care

These cuts would cost thousands of public and private sector jobs and put countless families, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income children at serious risk of homelessness or death.

We need legislators to pass the Governor’s proposed $12 billion revenue package AS THE BARE MINIMUM, while finding alternatives to cuts that threaten the lives of seniors and put low-income children at a greater risk of homelessness!

And to help you get the conversation started, here are a few suggested messages:

  • These Cuts Are Lethal. Share with your legislators how these cuts will threaten you or the people you care about with homelessness, isolation or death.  Be specific:  how much money do you have each month, and what will these cuts do to your ability to go to work, pay rent, buy food and get health care?
  • Alternatives are Possible. In the face of such dangerous and potentially lethal impacts on California’s people, we are calling on legislators to look at less dangerous alternatives.  For example, the legislature could save hundreds of millions of dollars by cutting California’s prison budget, which the Governor’s proposal leaves untouched!
  • “Be Our Champions.” We need to urge legislators and key budget decision makers to be “our champions” and find alternative solutions to mitigate these life-threatening cuts! More than anything, we need to let them know what kind of California WE ALL want to live in – one that values and understands the contributions that strong health and human services have for all Californians!

Your voice matters!
