Los Angelenos take on BIG OIL!
On Thursday, July 22nd over 1,000 people gathered in Los Angeles under the Rebuild California campaign to march to Occidental Petroleum demanding that they pay taxes for drilling off California’s coast. While the state considers drastic cuts to programs for struggling families, further cuts to education, as well as massive lay-offs, oil companies are allowed to drain resources from the state – from which they make huge profits yet pay no taxes. That’s because oil companies like Occidental exploit a tax loophole that would otherwise bring $1.2 billion to the state annually.
Marchers carried signs with demands, including, “Pay, Baby, Pay!” and, “Books, Not Barrels! To help make sure their voices were heard, participants blew whistles and called attention to passing motorists as they marched to Occidental offices shouting, “Pay your Fair Share!”
As they passed the front steps of the corporation, each one dumped a small container of black slime (resembling oil) onto the entrance to protest their frustration with Occidental and other oil companies that benefit from wasteful corporate tax loopholes at the expense of California’s working families. California is the only state in the union that does not tax oil companies to drain off our coastline.
The event was covered by KCAL, ABC, NBC, NPR and other local television, radio and print media.
