Fighting Back Against the May Revise
More than 75 Californians from all across the state joined Parent Voices in the Capitol on Thursday to voice their concerns and give public testimony before the California State Assembly Budget Subcommittee #1 and 2 on the devastating impacts of Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed May Revise budget.
Parents, child-care providers and others from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Contra Costa, Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, Fresno and Hayward all shared their stories of how the Governor’s attempt to slash child care and eliminate CalWORKS would have horrifying consequences for California’s struggling families, cost the state jobs and further plunge California into the economic abyss.
These powerful stories had a definite impact on the Assembly Budget Subcommittee. Several Members, including Asm. Members Chesbro, Swanson and Bell, exclaimed their unanimous support in rejecting the proposed cuts to CalWORKS and child care. Afterward, the Assembly Budget Subcommittees voted to reject the Governor’s outrageous and harmful cuts to child care and CalWORKS.
